Oscar winner Natalie Portman, set to star in not one but two upcoming stoner comedies, said in a new interview that while she used marijuana in her younger days, she's now "too old" for cannabis.
"I love stoner comedies," Portman, 29, told Entertainment Weekly. "I smoked weed in college, but I haven't smoked in years.
"I'm too old," Portman said. "I wish I was that cool, but I'm like an old lady now. I'm in bed by 10 p.m. I can't do that anymore."
Her comments were made before she recently announced her pregnancy.
The acclaimed actress, who took home an Oscar for her role in last year's Black Swan, is slated to star in Your Highness, which will be released later this month. Another stoner comedy, the just-announced Best Buds, will have to wait until after the birth of her first child this summer, reports Andrea Magrath at the Daily Mail.
Side note: There's nothing quite as irritating to this 50-year-old curmudgeon as a privileged 29-year-old whining about being "too old" to do anything. Shut the hell up, Natalie; get out and live a little. You're in the prime of life, and you'll never be twenty-something again.
One thing you can say for Portman: she's no dummy. The actress graduated from Harvard in 2003 with a B.A. in psychology.
"I don't care if college ruins my career," she told the New York Post at the time. "I'd rather be smart than a movie star."
But now with her admission of being a college stoner, it seems Natalie wasn't quite the straight-arrow academic she seemed.
Portman will relive her pot-smoking days in Your Highness, a medieval comedy in which she stars alongside James Franco and Danny McBride as a brothers on a quest.
She plays Isabel, a mysterious warrior who joins brothers Thadeous and Fabious in their quest to rescue Fabious' bride Balladonna from an evil sorcerer.
Portman said her interest in Your Highness was sparked when director David Gordon Green told her the role -- that of an arrow-slinging female warrior -- wouldn't be just window dressing, reports EW.
"When I sat down with David, he was like, 'The girl's going to be funny here,' " Portman said. "To have him be able to think of me in that way was so lucky, because [the role] is a real departure from anything I've done on film."
An additional level of challenge is added to their quest by Thadeous' fondness for getting stoned.
Portman will both produce and star in Best Buds. In that one, she'll play a bride-to-be who leaves her fiance at the altar for a marijuana-filled road trip with her two best friends.
"We're into very female comedies; there just aren't enough," Portman said, reports Huffington Post. "There's a difference between being in a bra and underpants as an object on a men's magazine cover and playing yourself -- a woman with desires and needs who loves and laughs with her friends -- in a bra and underpants."
